Newsletter Number 16 - October, 2006

By now the more observant of you, or those with at least a pulse, would realise that I have been a little slow with the latest addition to the most important record of world affairs since the Magna Carta. Well relax, put your feet up, grab a coffee and tim tam and enjoy the latest musings of any Aussie lost abroad - well it least stuck in Amsterdam!

In this edition we take a trip to the sea side and Brighton, enjoy the sparkle of diamonds in Antwerp and revisit one of my favourite cities, Berlin.

Oh, and thanks to Marcus for taking the picture whilst we were wandering around London

"oh I do love to be beside the sea side"

Some of you will recall that whilst on Mykonos I met Alistair, a Londoner with roots firmly planted in Brighton. I took him up on his offer to visit the home of the Conservative Party conference and tacky tourist piers. Actually, I really had a great time. Walking around the city you get a sense of what it would have been like in its' hey day; little hotels full for the summer with holiday makers from London.

They breed them tough from
an early age

You can get a sense of the
former glory days of the city

I know, I know...but it had to be done!

A Weekend In Antwerp

Given that I have hardly spent any weekends at home I thought I would continue with my travels and head to Antwerp for a weekend. A friend of mine, Pedro (see left) has recently finished renovating the apartment he has moved into, right in the centre of town - perfect location

There is some absolutely gorgeous architecture in Antwerp. These houses are on one of the more expensive streets in town...

Back To Berlin
A few years ago I made a trip to Berlin and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I find it a fascinating city of contrasts, tension and constant change. This trip I went with a few friends who joined me for a Berlin party...somethings it is better your mother doesn't know so sorry - no more details.

To revisit my 2003 trip click here.  I didn't take as many photos this time, but some of them can be found in the album section or clicking here.

This picture is taken inside the recently finished Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. There is quite a lot controversy about the memorial, but it is an amazing and moving space to visit.

Well that is it - short and sweet. I am actually sitting behind my PC with my first cold of the winter - sniff and getting ready for a trip to Bahrain for work. I'll let you all know if anything exciting happens...

Believe or it not I have after almost 5 years I have started Dutch lessons. OK, I know that more people speak Bahasa and it helps to have a throat infection to get the gggghhh sound right, but hey...when in Rome!
